The Schneider family raised their children in busy Deacon Street in an area of London called Elephant and Castle. Their home there in 1901 was big enough to house their large family of eight, a servant and two lodgers. The head of the family - Jacob Ettel Schneider - ran his own mineral water company.
Their eldest three children - Rachael, Samuel and Hilda - had all been born in the immigrant area of Whitechapel before the family moved to the other side of the Thames where the youngest three - Marcus, Jeannette and Myron - were born in the South East London area of Southwark.
Lenny's father Myron was born on the 6th January 1906 but didn't get to grow up in London like his elder siblings as the family emigrated to New York the following year. Myron's eldest brother - 18 year old Samuel - and their father Jacob travelled ahead on board the RMS Etruria, arriving in New York on January 6th 1907. The rest of the family travelled under the care of Myron's Uncle Joseph Schneider on the HMS Lucania, leaving from Liverpool on the 23rd February and arriving in New York on the 2nd March 1907.
